Case study 1: Chanelle Taylor
Updated on

Chanelle Taylor, 31, is a painter and sprayer from Caerphilly, Wales. She began her career after discovering a love and talent for painting and wondering whether she could make her passion pay.
Why I Love the Work
I’ve always been interested in home improvements and really enjoyed painting and decorating my own home. I realised I was good at it when friends and family started asking me to help with theirs — and I started to wonder if I could do this for a living.
I love the flexibility of working for myself, and I really enjoy watching a space transform — it’s so satisfying.
I have children now, so it’s useful to be able to juggle hours and still work when I want to.
I’m not saying it isn’t hard work — it can be, especially as I am a real perfectionist and always want to do the best possible job. It’s also important to keep up with the times and the latest techniques. I am now moving into spraying as it gives such a great finish.
Women in the Industry
I think more women should consider working in this industry.
Other than the odd ignorant comment when I have been buying supplies in DIY stores, I have been really welcomed by clients.
Historically — and I’m talking over a hundred years ago — women were often responsible for this work and I don’t know why they stopped. Women often have a great eye for detail and flair, so they’re perfect for this career.
It also allows great flexibility and you can work the hours you want — I am so busy now I can turn away work if it’s not right for me.
Encouraging the Next Generation
I trained hard to be the best I can be, so I wouldn’t want anyone to think it’s an easy ride if you want to be at the top of your game. I went to college and worked hard for years, but now my career offers me so many options and it makes me very happy.
I’d certainly encourage young people to consider painting and decorating as a career choice.
There are so many benefits: flexible working hours, good pay, and a great work/life balance.
It’s also so satisfying to see a space transformed by your work — it’s a great feeling!
