In my experience the aluminium windows look good but are not the best for keeping heat in as the aluminium will attract cold

Aluminium windows have come a long way in the past 10 years, I do work for architects for specialty contracts with highly specified thermal demands.
The very best aluminium windows are twice as good as upvc windows but 4 x the price.
I also fit aluminium windows with the same Thermal properties as upvc windows prices about 50% above on price of upvc windows but superior quality.

Aluminium windows and door have came a long way they now have a polyamide thermal break between the internal and external aluminium faces. Where a thermal insulation with vary on different window sizes and make ups the typical u-value on an aluminium window is 1.4 or better this would be the same as a Upvc window. A good U-value would be anything that meets Building Regulations or lower – this is currently set at 1.4 for existing dwellings.

Aluminium windows should have a thermal break in the frame. This is normally plastic and stops the metal contucting cold to the inner part of the frame. Also recommend rubber gaskets instead of brush strip. Most are made with the rubber nowadays.
