Wickes, B&Q, Travis or Ruby UK?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 3.20 PM

Doing a lot of decking quotes currently and wondered what your guys thoughts are on timber delivery companies? Used Wickes & B&Q in the past and timber quality has been sh*t. Heard lots about Ruby UK online and wondering if anyone has experienced there deliveries? Reviews on their website seem legit and good.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Dear James, I’ve had the same issues when ordering timber from Wickes and B&Q as the quality is poor (i.e uneven boards, joists or deck boards; split or chunks missing). I would say Travis and Ruby can offer better quality, although prices are slightly higher. In my opinion it is worth paying a bit extra and get good quality timber, specially for the finish looks of your jobs and durability.

Not sure about the delivery, but their timber is monumentally expensive!!! I'd suggest trying local builder's merchants and saw mills in the area that you are quoting for. A simple search on your preferred search engine or Yell.com should do the trick to find a local supplier. If you buy a lot of timber and they supply you with a 'stack' and then you find a few bad boards for example, they will often exchange them for free. After looking at their website, I wouldn't bother looking at them again! To be honest, each of the companies you mention are renowned for being pricy! Compare Ruby's prices to these... https://www.davidmussonfencing.com/ If you are in the midlands area, this gives you an idea of the prices I'd pay. I now live in Wales and it's sometimes cheap enough to drive from Wales to them, collect what I need and drive back again and save a fiver or more for a cuppa each way enroute. Just search 'saw mill' and/or 'builder's merchants' and the area you want to work in.

I always use either Travis or Parker’s as the timber quality is much better. But anywhere you can go pick your own timber is preferable
