Installing an all electric range cooker on 32amp ( instead of 40 )

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.37 PM

I would like to install an all electric range cooker ( 90 or 100cm size ) .. but on looking up manufacturer installation details they all seem to recommend a 40 to 45 amp hard wired connection. My kitchen only has a 32 amp hard wired connection, ( im on a low income and my landlord will not upgrade it ) Also the wire from the socket switch has been extended about 2 metres as i wanted my cooker on the other side of the room ( i paid for an electrician to do this a few years ago).. My question is.. if the cooker was connected and i dont use all the ovens and hobs at one time, would it work on the existing connection ? .. would it just trip if overloaded, or could it be a safety risk..? ..could some kind of safety cut off be put on the wire maybe ? i know the answer is to upgrade the wiring, but i probably cant afford to. much appreciate any advice, thank you

Hi Tod The 45 Amp indication on the cooker will be maximum demand. All cookers can have diversity applied to them due to the fact that they are not fully powered all of the time they are on. With diversity applied you draw would be closer to 25A which your 32A MCB would be sufficient for assuming all wiring is of correct size.

John Ward explains the cooker diversity calculation/ equation very well. A 32amp circuit is sufficient cooking in the home. Assuming the cable is of the correct cross sectional area too.

I agree with NHX Electrical answer, the below link by John Ward explains it very well. Also take note if your current cooker isolation switch incorporates a singe socket john explains it in his video. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QQduU8RkjD8

Having actually installed quite a few, all the info advises them to be installed on between a 45amp min to 50 amp 10mm circuit but they actually mostly only require a 6mm 32 amp. If supplied and delivered direct from them they won’t connect the gas unless they see the 45/50amp circuit they state as being required, otherwise don’t worry about it!! Btw, tripping from overload is a massive safety risk and the breaker is your circuit safety cut off you ask about lol .....
