Rendering, garden retaining wall
Anonymous user 16/03/2024 - 2.32 PM
Recently (4 days ago)had a breeze block wall (which is a retaining wall for raised flower bed) rendered. I am concerned that it has since rained and it looks wet on top and bottom. It has yet to painted. Is this because it has not dried completely or a fault in render? I am reluctant to paint as I feel these patches will still be apparat. Advise please

Hi Sally
Breeze and concrete blocks are pourous, so is a render until it is sealed so they will absorb moisture. Without seeing photos or the construction method of the wall I can't be sure if it will continue happening. If there is no barrier between the soil and the blocks, moisture will continue to weep through. Before you paint, buy a sealer for the render and then be selective on your paint, go for a Sandtex product. They are designed for exterior use. If the paint does start to flake off you may have to look at underlying issues and how the retaining wall was built.

Maybe should have gone for an acrylic based render or silicone based they're more resistant to these conditions!its going to happen over time whichever you decide.
