Do i need a MOT Type 1 sub base ?

Anonymous user 12 June 2020 - 11.17 AM

I am looking to replace and extend my garden patio with 20mm porcelain tiles. Do I need to lay a MOT type 1 sub base, or can I just use sharp sand?

Yes you will need. 100mm aggregate, mot type 1 is fine how ever not not necessary, 25mm clean limestone would be sufficient, as long as compact enough.

The area needs digging out first then a geotextile membrane laid on the ground with 100 mm of type one subbase would give a better base for the new patio

Absolutely. Following excavation, a minimum of 100mm MOT type 1 sub base is required on top of a geo textile membrane. Clean stone does not compact properly. Type 1 has enough fines in it to ensure it compacts well to create a solid sub base. Without a geo textile membrane, the stone will just push into soft ground creating a soft base. As mentioned above, the paving should then be on a minim 25mm bed of sand/cement dependant on what is being laid etc.
