What’s the best way to extend a socket

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi I have a single 13a socket on a wall I have put panelling on and now need to bring the socket forward. I bought a new stud wall back box to mount it on the panelling. When trying to fit the box the wires are too short to attach the socket in the new back box. How can I extend them? Create a spur to the new socket and leave the other redundant? Use a connector block in the old back box to extend the cable into the new one? Is 2.5mm L/N/E still ok for the extended piece? Any help is great fully appreciated Ben

You want a qualified electrician to do it. Any loose connections could result in arcing. Ideally they’d crimp on to extend.

Hi Ben, Following the BS 7671 Wiring Regulations this cable must be either crimped or use Wago connectors. Please make sure you keep the cable the same size (2.5mm) and also place a blanking plate on the old socket.

The best way would be to call an electrician in to do it.

The best way to extend a socket is with a qualified and registered electrician, that way regardless of the method they use it’s going to be completed with the correct test results recorded, the correct inspections made, the correct materials, the correct protection from faults and electric shock and you’ll know the properties earthing and bonding is up to scratch. They’ll give you all the little pieces of paper that make sure your house insurance is still valid and if it goes wrong it’s on their insurance and guarantee. In the grand scheme of things you’ll be paying sparks for less than a hours work so why take the risk in doing it yourself.

You can use connectors to extend the wiring, I use Wago connectors that works very well. Make sure you bring the ring over to the ring to the other socket. So you should have 2 wiring in your old socket do not connect all of them color by color to your extension but bring two cables to the new socket and fix both cable into your new socket,so the ring is safe.

Hi they do connectors which are maintenance free now, unlike the old school connectors the connection are more solid, maintenance free for a reason I’d extend the cable with these with 2.5mm twin and earth and you’ll have no problems in the future

The correct way is to crimp a new piece of cable to each of the cables you already have. Use 2.5mm. That way you maintain the integrity of the ring circuit and it is a solid joint rather than connector block. Regards John

Hi personally I would either crimp or use use wago/push fit maintenance free connectors and just extend to the length. If the junctions are accessible a choc block type connector is ok. The joints need to be enclosed in a box with the sheaths taken into the box or within the socket backbox
