Sanding, priming and painting

Anonymous user 14 June 2019 - 12.55 PM

I have asked and agreed to pay a decorator to sand woodwork and prime it and paint it. I wish I could post a photo but it looks like it’s never seen sand paper. The decorator keeps saying it’s a old house so won’t be smooth, but is this really a reasonable excuse? I plain to pay £2100 for hallway including strip wallpaper and 1 floor plastered. It’s expensive and the builder said it’s because there was a lot of wood to sand.

It's a strange question without seeing the property but my belief the price that is mentioned is high what else is involved in the price, regarding the doors and frames you have to be careful in what is agreed upon. In simple terms you cannot make a silk purse from a cow's ear. The client must explain what he wants, the tradesman must inform him of all problems from the start so they both know what the situation. For me the job is not over until the client is happy.

Hi. Prep is the difference between a good and a bad job, in terms of asthetics and longevity. It can also be the most labour intensive part of the job, and how much prep is done will define where a decorator is in the overall quality of their work, and commitment to the job . I think as you've pointed out without photos ( and often photos will not show the detail required for this) it's near immposible for anyone here to judicate. Trim should be smooth to touch when finished but if old and has been knocked about a fair bit (dents chips etc) then that patina will remain unless a lot of work is put in filling the woodwork with 2 pack epoxy filler and sanding that, similar to car body work. I have done this as requested and a near faultless finish was obtained, but as i say, a lot of work and dust But you are the customer, if you're not given the finish you expected/want, and no-one is prepared to improve the standard then find or request another decorator.
