Couldnt recommend how much sand would be required without knowing the depth of the pit, to stop the weed put a membrane down.

You would need a membrane able to let any rain water through and prevent weeds and 1 tonne of sand would give you a sand depth of approximately 5 to 6 inch

A bag of play sand indicates what it would cover and what depth. So the customer would be asked that at the time. Membrane still lets moisture in and the sand would be damp and open to contamination so I would advise a plastic container or ready made pit so annually it can be washed and replenished. Also it can be covered to save animals getting in and making a mess.

In Theory for a sand pit 2 metres square X 200mm deep you should need 0.4 cubic metres or 0.4 of a metric ton. As bags of play sand are sold in 25 kg bags you should need about 16 of these. Make sure you buy play sand (Silver sand) though as if you buy builders sand you little angels skin will be orange when he comes in as builders sand isn't washed before delivery. A Geotextile membrane under the sand will stop the weeds and a cover will be needed to stop the cats using it as a new toilet. 💩 Have Fun!
