Is Wickes own brand paint any good?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.48 PM

Was looking at painting my living room and wondered if I was safe to go with Wickes own brand or from one of the main brands like dulux? A view from experienced tradeperson would be much appreciated. Thanks

Dulux is better quality, but if you’re on a budget-Wickes is cheaper.

For what you pay yourself in Wickes I'm sure a decent painter and decorator in your area would get you a better quality paint incorporated in to his price for the same money if not less

personally, having used wickes emulsion myself on a job where the customer supplied it, i found it to be an adequate and satisfactory finish. however, i found it a bit watery to work with. as a pro decorator, if i'm supplying the emulsion, i always tend to use leyland super leytex (white or magnolia). a very high quality and reasonably priced product (around £27 for 15 litres) with high opacity, good coverage and great for use on new plaster (as a mist coat first before subsequent full bodied coats). not available (as far as i'm aware) in colours other than white / magnolia. however if i were to emulsion a wall in a "colour" i would always tend to use super leytex first as a base coat.

The Wickes paint maybe cheaper but in my opinion it's worth spending a bit more on a professional trade paint, this may seem more expensive at first but will last longer, will be tougher on the surface, has more pigment which generally means colour so will last longer and thus be more cost effective in the long run.

I’ve used wicks paints before, but never liked the quality or finish of the final results. I would always go for Dulux paints , better brand and better finish....

In most cases with paint cheap isn't always best. Cheaper paints do not cover as well so multiple coats are needed, more work more paint. Dulux trade paint cover s well and normally only 2 coats are needed.
