What is causing a banging/knocking noise on inside wall when it's windy?

Anonymous user 17 March 2019 - 10.07 PM

Hi, hoping someone can help as this problem is driving me mad! Every time it's windy there is a banging/knocking noise, which seems loudest with my ear pressed up against the inside wall which separates me and my neighbour (small semi-detached, 1920s build). It can be heard downstairs as well but seems loudest in the main bedroom upstairs, which the chimney breast goes through. I've tried googling and have seen suggestions of a loose chimney pot but I've been outside with binoculars and can't see any movement, and I had the flaunching re-done when I moved in last March. There are two aerials attached to the chimney, one in use and one old, but neither seem to be moving to an extent which would cause knocking. I have a gas fire in the living room which has been tested fine. There are several wires running across the roof but again these don't appear to be moving and I wouldn't have thought they would cause such a noise. The noise itself isn't constant, and isn't consistent (difference in volume, tone) but it's unbelievably frustrating and has been preventing me from sleeping. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this and what I could do to address the problem would be massively appreciated.

Hi Ross, have you tried getting into your and/or your neighbours loft space and inspect the roof and partition wall ? Could be some kind of damage occurred (due to old age, condensation/water damage/rot etc.) letting air leak pressure in and rattling rafter or joist members. Anyway best get in there with a good touch light (PS. be careful, check for asbestos as its a 1920s build, reading up on that would be good thing) to eliminate possibilities. From that point a plausible solution could be devised. all the best.

Hello there, it could be the chimney has been lined and as the wind is coming down the chimney it’s causing the lining to rattle. Also have you ever gone up in the attic when it’s windy to listen out for that noise?

A loft inspection would be the first point of call with a decent light, but importantly if the loft is not boarded make sure you only stand on the wooden trusses,if you stand in between you will go through the ceiling. Also check the chimney stack on the roof if it adjoins the party wall, there might be an old aerial that has come loose and is blowing around on the wire. Take care.
