Is thermal wallpaper good enough to stop condensation damp in north face external wall corner

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.51 PM

Hi I am currently living in 1920 solid wall 3 bed semi house. 1 first floor bedroom is north face with two side of external wall. We normally get some damp right at the bottom to middle of corner between two external wall joints. No leaking gutter from outside as i can see, and it feels like it is condensation damp caused by the cold wall. 1, Some people recommend thermal wallpaper, i am not sure whether this is right choice to completely fix the problem. 2, I know the normal wallpaper with be easily broken/peal off etc and need some fix time to time. will thermal wallpaper be difficult to maintain if problem happened. 3, And could i apply any wallpaper on top of thermal wallpaper, and what if the top layer wallpaper need to be replaced? Thanks a lot.

The effectiveness of Thermal wallpaper can depend on where your property is situated. Different properties can be affected by extreme cold weather (i.e. are you living in an area prone to constant cold weather or where the weather is less harsh)? In general (walrock KV600) Thermal wall paper has proven to be very effective. As long as the rooms are vented (via open air vents and/or semi-open / locked windows). Condesation can be caused by the drying of wet / famp washing on/near radiators (common problem in flats)! So yes GOOD thermal insulation works well, as long as the room can breath. It is also a good idea to use a good quality anti mould / condensation paint, once the thermal insulation paper & fibre (top) linning paper are up & dry. Hope this helps. The key is Ventilation - Ventilation - Ventilation... Good luck

What you called damp on external walls especially on corners of the walls is condensation caused by cold breaching Normally this happens in winter on every uninsulated solid external wall without cavity or insulation. This becomes worst with lack of ventilation especially on wall and ceiling corners. This is a similar effect that we always get when we go in to our cars in the winter. Corners of the walls always look worst because lack of ventilation since the way natural ventilation works in circulation not in straight lines. The only way to eliminate condensation caused by cold breaching on external walls is to INSULATE them from inside or outside by professionals ( We can give you competitive estimate ) since they are not built with cavity. Unfortunately There is no other solution to eliminate this problem completely. I hope this was a useful advice.
