Is any of the sanded surface showing bare wood or a different colour to the new paint (e.g gone very off coloured , or coloured)? If yes I would use an acrylic undercoat on bare wood, or if discoloured acrylic or oil based. However for a professional finish and on my jobs I always undercoat regardless of colour.

Before i put any undercoat etc on the timber i would check there are no bare knots that need treating!(esp if you have rubbed back to bare timber) if there are the first job is to apply knotting solution follwed by a minimum of x1 undercoat, light rub down after followed by second coat if required, then use a finish paper before applying gloss i would recomend a quick dust over with a tac rag, these can be brough at any paint shop and will remove any dirt or dust on your woodwork, this is way to obtain good finish on wood

Dear Max
Any bare timber must be primed first. If your choice of paint finish is Gloss you will need to undercoat then apply the Gloss.Satinwood and Eggshell are self coating so no undercoat is required just two coats of the same.Remember to abrade in between coats of paint using 120 grade sandpaper.

HI
It is quite usual to have paint still on timber after it has been paint, you should not remove it all, you only need to take the shine off the existing paint to provide a key for the new paint.
You should undercoat the timber prior to painting as this will provide a good base for paint helping it stick and give a better fiinish when top coated.
Also after rubbing down you should wash the paint work off with a sugar soap solution as this will ensure all the dust is removed and again help the paint stick and provide a better finish
I hope that helps

Hi Max_68, Yes you will, you will nedd to give your skirtingboard 2 coats of undercoat and use a fine grade sandpaper to sand between coats, a 120 grit paper will give you a nice smooth finish before you gloss. Make sure you wipe down the skirtingboard with white spirit after you have sanded them down. Hope this helps.

Hi, yes on bare wood you would normally do one coat of wood primer 2 coats of undercoat and 1/2 coats of top finish, ie gloss. Thanks

You should always undercoat any timber before glossing, however it is not necessary with a satin coat but may require an additional coat

yes. you should always undercoat before applying a finishing coat as it helps to key the top coat to the woodwork.

All the answers given are more or less correct however a tacky rag is by far the best method to remove dust. It is, as the name implies, very tacky and will lift all residues
