Fitting new facia's, soffits, guttering & downpipes. Whats the correct process

Anonymous user 24 September 2015 - 10.03 AM

Hi, I'm looking to have new facia, soffits, guttering and downpipes. I've had some quotes one fitter said they will remove the first layer of tiles and fit a membrane to prevent damp from drawing up into the roof and then another fitter who said not usually unless it needs it? Also aswell it was mentioned about rafters being replaced if rotten. What should be done as standard? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi Sarah, 1. Any Contractor would be correct to replace felt where it has deteriorated behind the timber fascia, some companies may ignore this! This process is often backed up with the supply and fit of rigid eaves boards under the felt. Then you can see if any rafters need attention. If they do, they should be treated with suitable solution, and new tanalised timbers screwed to them (these go a little way up the existing rafters to get good solid fixings etc) if necessary. Then, you have a suitable set of fixing points for the new works. 2. The other Contractor will do it "if it needs it" is sort of saying the same I guess. I doubt Contractor 1 would do all that if it didn't need it. You could look up http://www.swishbp.co.uk/installation/ and watch the short clip which shows one way of installing. Lastly, to do the job properly usually necessitates suitable and sufficient access equipment. This should be allowed for. Hope that helps. Any further advice, please ask. Many Thanks, Jason.
