Chimney In Attic Not Supported, taken out in middle.
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM
Hi I have just bought a house and moved in. I was doing an inspection of the attic and saw that the chimney is not supported properly. The previous owners removed the chimney breasts on the 1st floor and left them in the attic and ground floor, from what my neighbour tells me this was about 5/6 years ago. I intend to keep the both of them on the ground floor in the kitchen and front room. When I went up to check if what remains are resting on lintels or gallows, I did easily see any support. I lifted the insulation and can see bricks have been taken out to the certain height then above just overhangs. There is then a purlin that rests on the chimney. First time buyer so not sure of the proper steps I need to take here so just asking for some ideas on where to go next. I need to get this checked over by a professional first but which type of person should come over, a builder / bricker or a roofer or a structural engineer? And if anyone’s encountered this before. This is a shared party chimney / wall and next door have their full chimney from the ground up. Thanks
