Is it possible to wallpaper ...

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Over anaglypta. Please excuse spelling. I have just been rewired and have been told that the plaster behind the paper is quite brittle and that the house will need completely replastering if we attempt to remove the existing paper. A lot of the wallpaper we have is anaglypta , not too heavily embossed at all, in fact quite smooth. My question therefore is, can I wallpaper over anaglypta. Thanks in advance for ur advice. Wxxx

yes you can wallpaper over it by all means but the finish you receive will depend on how embossed the paper underneath it also the new paper wont stick properly to the existing paper, not as well as it would be sticking to plaster or paint underneath. putting wallpaper over the top of other wallpaper is/should never be recommended by a professional decorator. you may be able to take off the existing wallpaper and simply fill in any cracks or holes although the danger of that is if you start taking it off and the plaster comes with it then it will definitely need replastering as well. hope this helps.

Of course it is possible. The question is how long it will last. If there is really no other option my advice would be to seal the existing paper before you hang anything else on it. If you don't do that the wet paste on the new paper may soak into the anaglypta and reactivate the paste underneath and the whole lot might start peeling off. There is a product called Zinsser Gardz that you can paint over the anaglypta and it might seal it enough to stop problems. To be honest it's not recommended but under the cercumstances might be your only choice. Gardz isn't expensive and it might save you some grief. What your new paper will look like though - just make sure you get it well stuck on because of the textured surface you might find it not sticking well.

Hi I would never recommend papering over paper especially over anaglyta. However in places you may be able to make a decent patch up but obviously would have to have a look at the job to make an accurate decision. If I couldn't make a patch job then unfortunately in my opinion it would have to come down.

I would never recommend papering over paper in any situation. Strip it, prep it and line and paint as recommended in an earlier answer. If it is of the extent it needs re-plastered, then I would get it done.....you know the old saying "if a jobs worth doing, it's worth doing right".

Hi I agree with the last post (Dc Decorating services) I would not paper over anaglyta it sounds like the plaster is crumbling under the paper in places you aso have the risk of the weight from your new wallpaper pulling away the anaglyta as the new paste mite lift the old paste when wet and then that would all need taking off.I would take the paper off and make good the walls (filling & plastering were needed) get a good lining paper (1100 grade)and have it laid horizontally this will hide any indentations in the wall and give your new wallpaper the look you are striving for. Hope this help good look with the project.
