Plastering & Rendering

how long should you wait before painting on external sand\cement render?

Hi, we've just rendered the front of our house with sand and cement, its Janurary so quite cold and the render was applied about a week ago. A painter told us its ready for painting now as long as we paint on stabliser or solvent based primer first (which is useful as we can make use of the scaffold to paint) However other folks have told me that external render takes anywhere between 6weeks and 3 months to dry. I'm now unsure what to do. How long should you wait before painting on the new external render? And how do you tell if its dry all the way through? (Bear in mind its the cold months - Jan 2015). Thanks very much!

Do not paint it unless you want damp issues inside, and the paint peeling off! The render needs to be fully dry, I imagine it will be March before you can paint..... Whatever possessed you to get rendering done this time of year?? If the render was applied in freezing conditions there is a chance it will all fall off anyway

Rendering done in January doesn’t sound like a great starting place to begin with. Render like plaster needs to be fully dry before painting on to avoid cracks and flakiness It’s hard to give an exact time frame but you will be able to tell by the colour the render dries as when to paint on Also recommend with first coat using a stabiliser with the paint
