Hall stairs and landing - Leyland trade used instead of Dulux trade

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.05 PM

I moved into a new Barrett town house 4 years ago . In April I employed a painter and decorater to reprint my hall stairs and landing at a charge of £880 he supplied the materials . The walls were originally painted with Dulux trade magnolia . He supplied leyland trade magnolia I was slightly concerned but he informed me it was a very good paint. Three months down the line my walls are very patchy and chalky not smooth and mark very easily even the edges of the walls look very worn in fact they look worse then before they were repainted. I could previously sponge off any scuff marks but now it just leaves a shadow. Please can someone advise me on what to do ??? I am now also concerned about the gloss paint he used again I have never heard of it I wanted satinwood but he advised me that it would yellow and his paint would not but it appears to have already help

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, All new build houses are painted with contract matt this allows any moisture still in the plaster work to escape and not blister or powder off. What he should have done was to ask you if you wanted vinyl matt applying which can be lightly cleaned. Leyland trade paints are of a good quality if correct product used for the job. The waterbased satin paint is not supposed to yellow as fast as the oil based paints. Hope this helps. Regards Bill

It sounds like he's used leyland contract magnolia, this paint is alright on new plaster. But not any good to use as a finish coat because it marks/scuffs very easy. To be honest in my experience leyland paints are not good anyway i never use their product. always use crown/dulux trade paints. DG. Decoarting

Leyland paint is good for new plaster and ceilings. Stairs and hallways need paint that can withstand heavier traffic so I would use either dulux Diamond matt, Valspar scrubable paint, b & q colours paint (in white only) is also great for any area as it's also scrubable.
