why does my radiators heats up when I switch on the hot water switch to my boiler?
Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.07 PM
I have a Potterton Suprima boiler which was serviced last year. The radiators are about 14 years old same age as the property and are in good condition. The hot water and heating are operated by two different switches. However, I found that when I switch on the heater it heats the hot water or if I switch on the hot water the radiator heats up. Please advise what could be the problem. Many thanks Annette

Hello,
A frequent and likely cause is a faulty or jammed three port valve.
In a typical central heating and hot water boiler system, the valve sends water to either the radiators, the hot water cylinder, or both.
It could also be that the valve is ok but the control wiring between the valve and its commands (switches / thermostats) has a fault.
In the list of possible repair costs for a heating system, your problem is a fairly economical one to rectify. Find an expert near you on mybuilder.com :-)

I'm guessing that you have a 3port valve and it's letting-by, the valve needs changing.
