Is an isolator switch required for an electric oven (with gas hob)
Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.32 PM
I've just had my house rewired and the electrician has not fitted an isolator switch for the electric oven (4.5kW). The hob is gas. The oven is on its own circuit so I can isolate it by switching it off at the fusebox. Is an isolator switch also required? ----- Thanks for the answers. Just checked the electrical certificate and electrician ticked a box saying all necessary isolators fitted. I'll have to get the electrician back to do this.

Yes, the wiring regulations require a local isolator switch that is close by the oven, such that the oven can safely be isolated for both maintenance and in the event of an emergency. The installation of the oven as it is currently is not compliant with BS7671:2008. Were you issued with both Electrical Certificates and Part P building regulation certificates for the rewire?

Try the kitchen cupboard. An isolator is necessary.

BS7671 2008 :2011 Amendment 1 states that manufacturers instructions should be followed when installing electrical equipment. it's also best practice to install an isolator for safety reasons. In the event of a fault to your cooker, you wouldn't want to run to the fuse board to isolate the cooker. I hope this helps.
