Bathroom Fitting- 30 Oct 2019
Incompetent and vacuous. Didn’t read the plans or sizes at the start, which meant many crappy adjustments were made throughout, ie sink on the wrong side, oven protruding out etc. Anything that seemed hard was an ‘extra’ cost. Damaged most items that were installed and then refused to change them as it was too much effort. Quality of workmanship was very low, and finishes were terrible, when requested to amend he flatly refused. He seemed very inexperienced and possibly had never fitted a kitchen or bathroom before. Once he had received 90% of the contract money he started refusing to do things and not turning up, eventually leaving the job unfinished. He totally ignored requests to finish the job and kept our keys!! He is supposed to be a qualified gas engineer - however managed to break our boiler and then refused to fix it as he didn’t know how. I mean it’s just lunacy! We have since had another quote to complete the work and fix all the damage he caused which is the same price as what we have already paid. The new builder noted the work used primitive methods and was substandard. I would not recommend Nikolay at all. Total nightmare to deal with and unbearably unprofessional. I can only assume the other positive reviews on here are from his friends!!

Questions to ask a Shadwell painter and decorator

Choosing a Shadwell painter and decorator isn’t just about finding someone who can apply a coat of paint. It’s about working with someone who genuinely cares about how your home looks and feels. Here are some questions to help you make the right choice:

What types of projects have you completed in Shadwell?

From period terraces and cottage interiors to modern flats, each property in Shadwell has its own character. Ask your painter or decorator about their experience with homes similar to yours, and what finishes or materials they recommend for your walls or woodwork.

Can you share photos or examples of your recent work?

Before-and-after images give you a sense of their style, attention to detail, and how they approach surfaces or colours. Many painters and decorators feature their work on MyBuilder, so it’s easy to browse through and see what inspires you.

Do you have references from past clients in Shadwell?

Hearing how others describe their workmanship, communication, and reliability can make your decision easier. You can also check reviews on MyBuilder to see how previous customers felt about their results.

How do you prepare surfaces and deal with cracks or damp patches?

Proper prep makes all the difference. A good decorator will explain how they handle imperfections before painting to ensure your new finish lasts.

Are you familiar with local rules for decorating listed or conservation buildings in Shadwell?

Decorating listed buildings in Shadwell sometimes needs formal consent to protect architectural significance. Knowing how to navigate these regulations and whether specific materials or colours are required can make a big difference in avoiding fines or costly rework.

FAQ: Common questions about Shadwell painting and decorating services

How long does a typical painting and decorating project take in Shadwell?

Project length varies with the size and nature of the work. A single room might take a few days, while larger jobs like whole-house decorating or detailed woodwork can take several weeks. Factors like surface preparation, drying times, and weather conditions for exterior work also affect the schedule.

What kind of paint or finishes are suitable for Shadwell homes?

In Shadwell, common choices include matte and eggshell finishes for interiors due to their elegant look and ease of touch-ups. For exterior surfaces, weather-resistant paints that cope with the local climate, such as moisture and temperature changes, are essential for lasting protection.

How do decorators prepare surfaces in older or period homes in Shadwell?

Surface preparation in Shadwell may involve cleaning, filling cracks, sanding, and sometimes treating issues like dampness. Proper prep is key to paint adhesion and finish durability, especially in homes with plaster, lath walls, or older wood.

Will painters and decorators in Shadwell help with colour selection or test samples?

Many decorators offer guidance on colour choices based on lighting and room use and can provide sample swatches or test patches to help you visualise the final look before commitment.
