Question 1

How often does exterior paintwork need redoing in Llanelli?

Accepted Answer

More frequently than in a drier, inland town. On a well-prepared Llanelli property in a sheltered position, exterior paintwork should last six to eight years.

On exposed elevations or properties close to the estuary, the combination of rainfall, humidity, and wind can shorten that to four to six years. Using breathable, weather-resistant products from the start is the single most effective way to extend the interval.

Question 2

Why does paint keep peeling on my Llanelli property?

Accepted Answer

Usually a preparation or materials issue, made worse by moisture. On older solid-wall terraces, interior peeling is often caused by condensation, the wall surface drops below the dew point and moisture condenses on it.

Externally, it usually means a non-breathable product was applied over a vapour-permeable wall, trapping moisture behind the coating. You can browse photos of how other Llanelli homeowners have dealt with similar issues on MyBuilder.

Question 3

Do I need planning permission to repaint the outside of my Llanelli home?

Accepted Answer

For most properties, no. But if your home is listed or sits within a conservation area, external alterations including painting may need consent from Carmarthenshire County Council.

Question 4

How long does a full interior redecoration take in Llanelli?

Accepted Answer

A three-bedroom terrace, all rooms, hallway, and woodwork, typically takes four to seven working days depending on the surface condition.

Older properties with softer or more variable plaster will need extra time for preparation before painting can start. The preparation phase is the part most worth doing properly.

Question 5

Can Llanelli decorators advise on the right products for an older property?

Accepted Answer

A good local decorator will, and it's worth asking specifically. The products that perform best on Llanelli's solid-wall Victorian stock are not the same as those sold at mainstream DIY retailers.

Breathable emulsions, lime-compatible primers, and vapour-open finishes make a real difference on these properties, and a decorator who regularly works across Carmarthenshire's older housing will know why.
