Question 1

How often does exterior paintwork need redoing in Brighton?

Accepted Answer

More frequently than in an inland city. On a sheltered Victorian terrace in Hanover or Fiveways, a well-prepared exterior should last seven to ten years.

On properties closer to the seafront, particularly those directly facing the coast, salt exposure and UV from the south-facing aspect shortens that to five to seven years, sometimes less on very exposed elevations. Using the right products from the start makes a meaningful difference to how long any finish holds up.

Question 2

Do I need planning permission to repaint the outside of my Brighton home?

Accepted Answer

For most properties, no. Like-for-like repainting doesn't require permission. But if your property is listed or sits within a conservation area, Brunswick, Kemptown, parts of Clifton Hill, a significant colour change on an externally visible elevation may need consent from Brighton and Hove City Council. A good local decorator will flag this before you commit to a colour rather than after.

Question 3

How long does it take to decorate a Brighton Victorian terrace?

Accepted Answer

A full interior redecoration of a three-bedroom Victorian terrace - all rooms, hallway, and woodwork - typically takes ten to fifteen working days for a thorough job.

Properties with original features that need careful working around, or rooms in poor decorative order with significant surface preparation needed, will take longer. On Brighton period properties, rushing the preparation stage almost always leads to problems down the line.

Question 4

Why does exterior painting on Brighton properties cost more than elsewhere?

Accepted Answer

Mainly because of preparation and product specification. Getting a finish to last on a coastal property requires more thorough surface treatment, better quality coatings, and more coats than equivalent work inland.

On Regency stucco specifically, using breathable products rather than standard masonry paint adds cost but is essential to avoid moisture damage. You can browse photos of completed exterior projects on MyBuilder to see how other Brighton homeowners have approached it.

Question 5

Can Brighton decorators advise on colours for a period property?

Accepted Answer

Many can, and it's worth asking. Particularly if your property is in a conservation area where exterior choices are restricted.

A decorator with experience across Brighton's Regency and Victorian properties will have a working knowledge of which heritage palette options tend to gain approval, what finishes suit different interior periods, and how colours read in the strong south-coast light that Brighton gets for much of the year.
