Question 1

How long does loft boarding take?

Accepted Answer

A simple loft boarding job might take one to two days, while a full install with insulation protection or hatch work can run three to five days, depending on loft size and any complications like weak joists.
Once you've found a service on MyBuilder, discuss their timeline and availability before confirming the booking.

Question 2

Do I need planning permission for loft boarding?

Accepted Answer

You usually don't need planning permission for internal loft boarding, as it's not a structural change or conversion. However, always check with your local council if you're adding stairs or electrics.
If you're unsure, the loft boarding companies you connect with on MyBuilder can often advise on this before work begins.

Question 3

Should I board my whole loft or just part of it?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your needs. Smaller households might board just a section for seasonal storage, while larger families opt for full-loft boarding to maximise space without compressing insulation.
A loft boarding specialist on MyBuilder can assess your loft and recommend the best approach for your situation.

Question 4

How much weight can loft boards safely hold?

Accepted Answer

Standard loft boarding holds around 40-50kg per square metre, which is suitable for storage boxes and general household items. Heavier loads, such as gym equipment or dense archive storage, will need reinforced joists. A professional will check this as part of the job before any boards go down.

Question 5

Can I DIY my loft boarding?

Accepted Answer

DIY loft boarding can work for small areas if you're comfortable working at height and confident with tools. That said, a professional will carry out joist checks, protect your insulation correctly, and ensure the load is safely distributed, reducing the risk of falls, structural issues, or compressed insulation that could affect your home's energy efficiency.

Question 6

Will loft boarding affect my home's insulation?

Accepted Answer

This is one of the most common concerns with loft boarding, and it's worth raising with any company you're considering. Standard boarding installed directly on joists can compress insulation and reduce its effectiveness. Many loft boarding specialists offer raised boarding systems designed to sit above insulation, keeping your home warmer and your energy bills lower.

Question 7

What is the difference between loft boarding and a loft conversion?

Accepted Answer

Loft boarding creates usable floor space for storage within your existing loft. A loft conversion transforms the space into a habitable room, such as a bedroom or office, and typically involves structural work, insulation, windows, and planning permission.
Boarding is quicker, cheaper, and less disruptive, but if you need a liveable room, a conversion is definitely the route to take.
