Question 1

Do I need planning permission for loft boarding in Southwark?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, boarding your loft for basic storage falls under permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area in Southwark, it is always best to check with your local authority before any work begins.

Question 2

Will boarding my loft in Southwark affect my home's insulation?

Accepted Answer

Not if it is done correctly. Loft boarding companies in Southwark use raised systems, such as timber sub-frames or loft legs, to elevate the boards above your existing insulation. This prevents the insulation from being squashed, to make sure your home stays warm and energy-efficient.

Question 3

How long does it take to board a loft in Southwark?

Accepted Answer

A standard loft boarding job in an average-sized home usually takes one to two days to complete.

If you are asking a loft boarding company in Southwark to add extras like a new drop-down hatch, a timber ladder, or custom shelving, the project may take a little longer.

It's easy to request a timeline from Southwark loft boarding companies on MyBuilder. Simply post your job today and get matched with professionals in your area.

Question 4

Will boarding my new-build loft in Southwark void my warranty?

Accepted Answer

Many homeowners worry that adding storage space will invalidate their NHBC or similar new build warranty. As long as loft boarding companies in Southwark use a raised system that doesn't squash the insulation or require cutting into the roof trusses, your warranty should remain intact. However, it is always a good idea to check your specific policy wording, too.

Question 5

How much weight can a boarded loft safely hold?

Accepted Answer

A standard boarded loft is designed for light domestic storage, such as suitcases, holiday decorations, and boxes of clothes. It is not built to support heavy furniture or serve as a living space.

A professional loft boarding company in Southwark will use sub-frames to distribute the weight evenly across your joists.
