Question 1

Do I need planning permission for loft boarding in Esher?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, boarding your loft for basic storage falls under permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area in Esher, it is always best to check with your local authority before any work begins.

Question 2

Will boarding my loft in Esher affect my home's insulation?

Accepted Answer

Not if it is done correctly. Loft boarding companies in Esher use raised systems, such as timber sub-frames or loft legs, to elevate the boards above your existing insulation. This prevents the insulation from being squashed, to make sure your home stays warm and energy-efficient.

Question 4

Will boarding my new-build loft in Esher void my warranty?

Accepted Answer

Many homeowners worry that adding storage space will invalidate their NHBC or similar new build warranty. As long as loft boarding companies in Esher use a raised system that doesn't squash the insulation or require cutting into the roof trusses, your warranty should remain intact. However, it is always a good idea to check your specific policy wording, too.

Question 5

How much weight can a boarded loft safely hold?

Accepted Answer

A standard boarded loft is designed for light domestic storage, such as suitcases, holiday decorations, and boxes of clothes. It is not built to support heavy furniture or serve as a living space.

A professional loft boarding company in Esher will use sub-frames to distribute the weight evenly across your joists.
