What to ask loft boarding professionals in East Sussex before hiring?

Before the boarding work begins, asking a few simple questions will help you choose the right loft boarding service in East Sussex for your roof space.

Have you completed similar loft boarding jobs recently?

Check that they have handled jobs like yours before, from fitting standard raised boards to installing new loft ladders and hatches. Many loft boarding companies in East Sussex share customer feedback, case studies, or before-and-after photos on their MyBuilder profiles.

What boarding system will you use?

Ask how the installer will fit the boards into your loft. It is crucial that they use a raised system (like loft legs or timber sub-frames) so that your loft insulation is not squashed and has proper air flow.

Do you hold public liability insurance?

Always confirm that any loft boarding professional in East Sussex carries valid public liability insurance before work begins. This protects you if accidental damage is caused to your property or if someone is injured during the job. Most contractors should be able to provide proof of their cover without hesitation.

Will you assess whether my loft can safely support the boarding?

Before any boards go down, a good installer should check that your ceiling joists are strong enough to bear the added weight, particularly if you plan to store heavy items.

If there are any concerns, they should be upfront about what reinforcement may be needed before the work goes ahead.

Do you handle all aspects of the job, including electrics?

Ask if the loft boarding services include fitting loft lights, switches, or roof windows. If they do electrical work, local professionals should confirm they are Part P compliant and legally permitted to safely complete the job.

Can you provide a written quote before starting the work?

Always ask for a detailed, written quote outlining labour, materials, timelines and any potential extra costs. This can help you compare prices across loft boarding companies in East Sussex, to make sure you are getting the right value for you.

FAQs: Common questions about loft boarding in East Sussex

Do I need planning permission for loft boarding in East Sussex?

In most cases, boarding your loft for basic storage falls under permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area in East Sussex, it is always best to check with your local authority before any work begins.

Will boarding my loft in East Sussex affect my home's insulation?

Not if it is done correctly. Loft boarding companies in East Sussex use raised systems, such as timber sub-frames or loft legs, to elevate the boards above your existing insulation. This prevents the insulation from being squashed, to make sure your home stays warm and energy-efficient.

How long does it take to board a loft in East Sussex?

A standard loft boarding job in an average-sized home usually takes one to two days to complete.

If you are asking a loft boarding company in East Sussex to add extras like a new drop-down hatch, a timber ladder, or custom shelving, the project may take a little longer.

It's easy to request a timeline from East Sussex loft boarding companies on MyBuilder. Simply post your job today and get matched with professionals in your area.

Will boarding my new-build loft in East Sussex void my warranty?

Many homeowners worry that adding storage space will invalidate their NHBC or similar new build warranty. As long as loft boarding companies in East Sussex use a raised system that doesn't squash the insulation or require cutting into the roof trusses, your warranty should remain intact. However, it is always a good idea to check your specific policy wording, too.

How much weight can a boarded loft safely hold?

A standard boarded loft is designed for light domestic storage, such as suitcases, holiday decorations, and boxes of clothes. It is not built to support heavy furniture or serve as a living space.

A professional loft boarding company in East Sussex will use sub-frames to distribute the weight evenly across your joists.
