Review left on 8 Jun 2026Rating: 1 out of 5Install 33m path in front garden with pavers(Updated on 9 Jun 2026)This was a simple job: remove an asphalt path and replace with blocks. All was going well with Jim's crew - the work they'd begun was looking nice. I brought them coffee every morning, my wife baked them a cake. Then they disappeared for a week, Jim emailed an inflated invoice for the partially completed work saying "I will have to step away from the job". They'd already taken 2/3 total payment but had only ordered 40% materials. They didn't bother to deliver the rest of the materials, take away the rubble or clean the mess, they just walked away with the work 30% complete. I had two other similar quotes and hired Jim on the basis of the positive reviews here. My advice for others, do not pay until materials are all on site. Hold firm for the works to proceed as agreed. This job went wrong due to poor planning and Jim took advantage of our patience and kindness and expected us to absorb his losses.Answer from tradesperson:
Wrong I afraid the alarm bells should have rung when I realised he had started with another contractor and the contractor left site when I questioned this I didn't get a proper explanation. We started the job and found the client very standoffish and rude. The goal posts changed for the job to supplying topsoil not quoted for also we quoted for a trench 15 meters long 150 deep this became 30 meters long and 450mm depth plus the extra material to dispose off. We received £1720.00 Up to leaving the job. My costs at that point were £1900.00. Plus materials were left on site. The whole job would have cost £4k plus to complete so I would be out of pocket on completion and supplied receipts as requested. I could go on but I will warn other contractors to be very wary if asked to quote for completion of the work. The local merchants are aware of the situation. As you will see this is my first bad review out over a hundred so please decide for yourselves.

As an overseas landlord, I needed someone trustworthy, and Jim exceeded expectations. He provided a fixed, competitive quote and stuck to it with no hidden charges, even with specialist items like mattresses and sofas (POPs). He completed the entire job in one day and provided comprehensive 'before and after' photos and a video walk-through, which was vital for my remote inspection. He also provided a Waste Transfer Note and weighbridge ticket, ensuring everything was disposed of legally.
