Question 1

How long does a TV aerial installation take?

Accepted Answer

Most standard aerial installations take between one and two hours, depending on the type of property and where the aerial needs to be mounted.

More complex jobs - like multi-room setups, additional TV points, or tricky roof access - can take half a day or longer.

Question 2

Do I need planning permission to install a TV aerial?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, no. TV aerials usually fall under permitted development, so you won't need planning permission. However, if you live in a listed building or a conservation area, it's worth checking with your local council before going ahead.

Question 3

How do I know if my aerial needs repairing or replacing?

Accepted Answer

Common signs include a pixelated picture, channels dropping out, or no signal at all. Sometimes a repair is enough, tightening a loose fitting or replacing a damaged cable.

But if your aerial is old or storm-damaged, a full replacement is often the better long-term option. A TV aerial installer can carry out a signal test and advise on the right course of action.

Question 4

Should I look for a CAI-registered installer?

Accepted Answer

Yes, where possible. CAI (Confederation of Aerial Industries) registration is the main professional credential in this trade. It indicates a minimum standard of competence and means the installer is bound by a code of practice. It's not a legal requirement, but it's the most useful qualification to check for when comparing aerial installers.

Question 5

Can I get a TV aerial installed in my loft instead of on the roof?

Accepted Answer

Yes, loft aerials are a popular option. They're cheaper to fit and less exposed to the weather. That said, signal strength can be weaker depending on your area, the direction of the transmitter, and the materials in your roof. Your installer will be able to tell you whether a loft aerial is a viable choice for your property.

Question 6

Can a TV aerial installer help with poor signal?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Poor signal doesn't always mean you need a new aerial - sometimes it's down to positioning, outdated cabling, or interference from nearby buildings. An installer can run a signal test, identify the cause, and recommend the right fix rather than automatically replacing the aerial.

Question 7

Can a TV aerial installer also set up additional TV points?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you want to watch TV in more than one room, an installer can fit additional TV points connected to your main aerial via a signal splitter or distribution amplifier.

It's usually more cost-effective to have this done at the same time as any installation or repair work - so it's worth mentioning when you post your job on MyBuilder, so installers can include it in their quote from the start.
