What should I ask a gas engineer before hiring them?

Before hiring a gas engineer, ask about their **experience, qualifications, and insurance coverage**. Ask about the timeline for your project, the estimated costs, and the payment structure. It's also wise to request references from previous clients and ensure they are familiar with the specific gas work required.

Are gas engineers required to have insurance?

Gas engineers are not legally required to have insurance, but it is highly recommended. **Most professional gas engineers will have public liability insurance to cover any damage to property or injury caused during work**. Always **ask for proof of insurance** before hiring a gas engineer.

Do gas engineers offer guarantees on their work?

Yes, gas engineers **typically offer a guarantee on their work**. This can range from a few months to several years, depending on the scope of the project. It’s essential to check the terms of the guarantee, which **should cover any defects or issues arising from poor workmanship**.

How can I verify a gas engineer’s qualifications?

You can verify a gas engineer’s qualifications by checking their Gas Safe registration. **Only Gas Safe engineers are legally allowed to carry out gas work in the UK**. Ask for their registration number and verify it on the Gas Safe Register website.

How much deposit should I pay a gas engineer?

It’s common to **pay a deposit of around 10% to 20% of the total project cost upfront**. However, this **should be agreed upon in writing before any work begins**. Be cautious of gas engineers who ask for large upfront payments, and make sure you have a clear contract in place to protect both parties.

I cannot praise James Wright enough. Not only was his workmanship of the highest calibre, his attitude and general demeanour meant that it was a joy to have him in our home. The job itself was probably straight forward enough for him (installing two new radiators in a bedroom) but there were difficulties, of our making, that he had to overcome and he did so with great sensitivity and care. He worked way beyond the hours I had expected so that my very ill mother did not need to be inconvenienced any more than was necessary and for that I was extremely grateful. James quoted me an excellent price at the start and that did not waver. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to anyone and it is to my continuing regret that I have not yet been in a position to do so. I almost feel that I am letting him down in not yet doing so but I am bound to come across someone soon who is looking for a heating engineer and I will be able to make amends, so to speak. I must also apologize to James for the delay in posting this review, but continuing difficulties at home have made finding even the briefest of time, very difficult indeed. But then again, he is the type of gentleman who will totally understand .... I absolutely commend him!

I would not recommend. Sev and team did a good job, very quick, redid the gas central heating and installed the boiler in 3 days. My issue is with Sev’s customer service. He gave me price based on one specific boiler - when I challenged why this boiler instead of others and what makes one boiler better than another he dismissed me saying that the boiler he is installing will do for me and if I need another I can source it and he will knock £500 off the price - no advice, no guidance. Same thing when I asked for the flow rate and pressure because a prospective bathroom fitter wanted it to be able to advice on a suitable shower - he didn’t bother recording it and said that my bathroom fitter should stay focussed on the tiling he had to do! Post job job the kitchen fitter noticed that the pipe Sev had cut to set up for the sink was in bad condition causing a leak. The pipes were almost certainly in bad condition before Sev touched them however he would have saw that they were in bad condition yet he didn’t tell me. When I asked why he was rude saying they were my pipes, it’s not his responsibility to notify me if he sees that they are bad. The thing is he is right. However, one thing that I learnt from my renovation is that most builders will do a good job, few builders are capable of providing good pre and post job service which, in my view, is more important.

Recently had Steve visit and review a recurring fault on my Vallant boiler . Arrived bang on time and was professional and discussed the problem and potential causes contacted the suppliers and looked at options. Definelty went beyond a normal no obligation call out and opened boiler to inspect. As we are in process of upgrading the boiler to a new replacement I discussed also the options available which he has quoted. I have no qualms in posting a positive review as my personal experience to date with this Steve is very good.
