Question 1

How often should I have my garden maintained in Southampton?

Accepted Answer

For most Southampton gardens, fortnightly visits from April through to October keeps things properly managed through the active growing season. Monthly visits are enough for lower-maintenance plots.

The city's mild climate means growth starts early and continues late, so gardens can get ahead of themselves quickly if visits are spread too far apart. Over winter, most gardeners scale back to occasional tidy-ups rather than regular scheduled visits.

Question 2

Can a gardener help with a neglected garden?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it's a common first job for many Southampton gardeners. Particularly in the period terraces across Portswood, Shirley, and St Denys where gardens are sometimes left unmanaged between tenancies or ownership changes.

The usual starting point is a clearance to establish what's there, followed by a conversation about what to keep, what to remove, and what the garden could look like going forward.

Question 3

What plants do well in Southampton gardens?

Accepted Answer

Southampton's mild maritime climate gives gardeners more options than many UK cities. Hardy perennials, shrub roses, ornamental grasses, and most native hedging species all perform well. A local gardener who knows the area will be able to advise based on your specific plot.

Question 4

Is it worth getting a gardener in over winter in Southampton?

Accepted Answer

A couple of visits rather than regular maintenance is usually enough. Useful winter jobs include cutting back perennials, mulching borders, tidying hedges ahead of spring growth, and any structural work, raised beds, path improvements, drainage, that's easier to tackle when the garden isn't in full growth.

Southampton's mild winters also mean some jobs that would need to wait until spring in other cities can be carried out earlier here.

Question 5

Can I get a gardener for a one-off job rather than ongoing visits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most Southampton gardeners take on one-off work alongside any regular clients they have. Common one-off jobs include end-of-season clearances, pre-sale tidy-ups, hedge cutting, and getting a garden back under control after a period of neglect.

Be clear when you post your job that it's a single visit rather than ongoing work, so gardeners can quote accordingly.

Question 6

Do gardeners in Southampton handle hard landscaping as well as planting?

Accepted Answer

Some do, some don't. Many general gardeners are comfortable with straightforward jobs like laying gravel, building raised beds, or repointing existing paving.

More involved work, new patios, drainage systems, or significant structural changes, tends to be the territory of landscapers rather than gardeners. Be specific about what you need when you post your job on MyBuilder and browse photos on gardeners' profiles to get a sense of the kind of work they've taken on before.
