Question 1

Why does my Liverpool garden hold water for so long after it rains?

Accepted Answer

The most likely explanation is boulder clay. Much of Liverpool sits on heavy glacial till deposited by Irish Sea ice sheets around 20,000 years ago, dense, fine-textured clay that drains slowly and stays wet for extended periods after rain.

Gardens on unimproved clay get progressively worse as the soil compacts over time, particularly in high-traffic areas. The fix depends on what's causing the problem in your specific garden, improving soil structure with organic matter can help in borders, while lawns on persistent clay often need drainage channels or raised beds to perform reliably. A local gardener who works across Liverpool will have dealt with this regularly and can tell you which approach is likely to work for your plot.

Question 2

How do I find a gardener in Liverpool who actually knows my area?

Accepted Answer

Post your job on MyBuilder with your postcode and a description of what you need. Gardeners who cover your part of Liverpool and are available will respond directly, you're not searching a directory and cold-calling people who may or may not work in L18 or L15 or L4.

Once you have responses, browse their profiles, read reviews from other Liverpool homeowners, and look for photos of work in gardens similar to yours. A gardener with a solid run of reviews from your part of the city is a much more reliable choice than one who sounds good but has no local track record to point to.

Question 3

Can Liverpool gardeners help with overgrown Victorian terraced gardens?

Accepted Answer

Yes. And it's one of the most common jobs across the city's inner suburbs.

A garden that changes hands or gets left for a season can become substantially overgrown remarkably quickly. Local gardeners deal with these clearances regularly. The first job is usually to assess what's there, some of what's growing in an overgrown Liverpool terrace is worth keeping, before deciding what to clear and where to go from there.

Question 4

What's the best time of year to get a Liverpool garden sorted?

Accepted Answer

For larger projects, clearances, lawn renovations, new planting, late summer and early autumn tend to be the most practical window. Demand drops off from the spring peak, gardeners have more availability, and Liverpool's clay ground stays warm enough into October for new turf to establish properly.

Spring is the busiest time across the city, so if you're planning something significant it's worth posting your job on MyBuilder a few weeks earlier than you think you need to.

Question 5

Can a Liverpool gardener help with a small or compact garden?

Accepted Answer

Yes - and they're far more common across the city than larger suburban plots. The terraced streets of Liverpool's inner suburbs come with long, narrow rear gardens where space is limited and the right approach matters more than it would on a bigger plot.

Working well in a compact garden is a distinct skill, choosing plants that stay in proportion, layouts that make the space feel intentional rather than cramped, and knowing when simplicity is more effective than trying to do too much. Many Liverpool gardeners work in these kinds of gardens regularly.
