I began my apprenticeship as a mason in Caithness in 1986, becoming time-served in 1989. A mason in Caithness covers all aspects of general building, including block/brick laying, stonework, concrete floors, groundworks, roofing, steelfixing, chimneys, fireplaces, exterior plastering and harling/roughcasting. After 1989 I moved away and worked in the trade for the next 35 years, mainly throughout the UK, but also three years in Australia and five years in Germany. I am now back living in Caithness and "back on the tools".
