Question 1

Do I really need a damp surveyor?

Accepted Answer

If you are buying a new home or noticing persistent mould, hiring a damp surveyor is a smart choice. They possess the knowledge to differentiate between simple condensation and more severe structural issues like rising damp. This helps to treat the actual cause rather than just hiding the symptoms.

Question 2

How long does a damp investigation take?

Accepted Answer

A typical damp investigation usually takes between one and three hours, depending on the size of your property. Your chosen damp surveyor will need access to all affected rooms, and potentially the exterior, to assess the situation fully. Larger homes or complex moisture issues may require a slightly longer visit.

Question 3

Do damp surveyors cover commercial properties?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many damp surveyors assess both commercial and residential buildings. While residential surveys focus on homes, commercial damp investigations often deal with larger structures and different building materials.

Question 4

Should I hire an independent damp surveyor or a damp proofing company?

Accepted Answer

Hiring an independent damp surveyor is usually a good choice if you are looking for unbiased advice. While [damp proofers near you](https://www.mybuilder.com/damp-proofing/damp-proofer-tradespeople) may offer a free survey, they also sell treatments and might recommend unnecessary work.

Question 5

Can a damp surveyor help with a house purchase?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a damp surveyor can provide a detailed homebuyer report that outlines the extent of any damp problem and the costs to fix it. This report can help you to make an informed decision before completing your property purchase.
