The advert was for a 5ft loading bearing wall with a fixed budget. He came out, gave me a quote higher the budget. I went ahead, paid for materials he invoiced me, didn’t see the receipts but still paid. He started with a single wall and another tradesman mentioned to me that it should be double. Anyway after discussing, I agree for him to proceed with a retaining wall on the drive way. A few days after, he told me he bought some more bricks and I should pay him. He didn’t tell me he was going to buy the bricks even when I asked. He could not provide the receipts and I told him I will only pay £400 out of the £700 because I was trying to reason with him thinking he underestimated the materials so may be truly he needed more bricks but as I didn’t know if he was overcharging me or not, I decided to use my overdraft to pay what I considered reasonable. He then demanded I paid half of the labour even though the agreement was that he would get paid after he finished the work. He came laid some bricks, took some bricks away stating they were damaged and said he had finished. None of the wall measured up to 5ft, he built the fence inside the boundary line reducing the width of my driveway and even some of the bricks have fallen often.

I'm very pleased with the repair that Jack carried out on my garden wall. Even though it was a small job he took the time to do it properly and ensured the bricks that had fallen down were put back straight. It started raining a little on the day causing the cement to run. Jack returned a couple of days later to tidy it up like he said he would. On inspecting the wall today I noticed that the cement on the bricks on the inside of the wall did not look as neat as how it looks on the outside of the wall. Maybe the rain caused the cement to run too much, I don't know. Overall I am pleased though and I've asked Jack to quote for another job.
