I hired Carl for a garden and patio project. He seemed confident and knowledgeable at first, and his team did do a good job with the initial garden clearance and preparation. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks in it became clear the rest of the work wasn’t up to standard. The paving was laid in the wrong pattern and sloped towards the house rather than into the garden as we had discussed. Many slabs could be lifted by hand, and the retaining wall was built with unsuitable materials. There were also delays with the slab delivery and confusion over the fence panels, and I often felt I had to keep chasing for updates. Carl blamed his bricklayer, who was really bad, but a good contractor should recognise and stop poor work. To his credit, Carl refunded all my money, as he knew I had to hire other contractors to sort this out. I could see he genuinely felt bad about how things turned out. He’s a nice guy, but the workmanship was poor and I couldn’t recommend him for this type of job.

Peter was the on-site foreman on our complete house renovation, which took just over a year. This included an additional ensuite pod bedroom in the roof and a side-return and extension to the kitchen. Peter was totally reliable throughout the project and thoroughly professional. Throughout this time we were living in the house with the children. He was always on time, managed the on-site team well and communicated clearly with us. Georgi was great and we are already planning to have him back for further work. He fitted five fire doors in record time, including self-close mechanism on the kitchen door, to irregular frames and to a quality befitting a professional carpenter. He installed a kitchen window pane in 30 mins as part of his daily rate and a bunch of other fixes, including constructing a makeshift kitchen cabinet, installing ventilation fans, pre-cutting skirting boards, reinstalling and fixing a shower enclosure. He was multiskilled, punctual, polite and with a full professional tooset. When I asked him to redo a boxing-in of pipes which I hadn't specified to him adequately, he didn't quibble and on the second go he did a superb job. I wish I had found him to do my whole kitchen fitting!
