Back boiler making noise!!

Anonymous user 22/02/2024 - 2.34 PM

Hi I have a back boiler in a house I have moved into, I makes a he'll of a noise, I have had council gas men out seven times, replaced pump the last man told me it's like a kettle boiling with in a kettle.? The problem being on all the call outs, sods law the noise has only happened 1 time, it has been serviced, not I have had water tests done and the latest man has put in a "dye"? But now the noise is starting again, starts of as a low rumble sound and gets louder and louder, any ideas, as the council don't seem to have and sick of getting fibbed off! would just like to add the man turned down the heating controls to see if this work, but it didn't, did for while then kettle noise rattling came back. Even turned the pump down which to be homest all this stuff has not made any difference help!! Is my boiler knackered also the man who came and put the dye in said it stays in for about 2 weeks and then he comes and takes it out, it's been a month and dye still in there, why does this need to be taken out just out of interest?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Sounds like either Kettling which is caused by limescale or poss overheating. If its limescale, a simple noise silencer chemical added to the system will stop the noise in 2-4 weeks. If it is overheaing there are a number of possible causes. If you have a gravity hot water system, there could be air in the system. The easiest way to see if it is overheating is to turn the boiler stat down to its lowest setting and see if this improves the situation. If it does, get them back. Hope this helps. Fred.

Hi, All old boilers start ketteling, this can be helped with chemicals & sometimes a power flush may be required. But when a boiler gets past chemicals not working - its time for a new boiler, you will just waste money trying to cure the fault. I would guess your back boiler is over 30 years old & they are not to current regs. In the short term it will be more cost affective to replace & to run a new boiler. Hope this helps
