Painting over nicotine stained wallpaper

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 3.03 PM

Hi I've been trawling the net to try & find some tips to emulsion over nicotine stained wallpaper and I'm getting conflicting answers. Some sites have said use an 'oil based primer' first and them emulsion over that. Other sites have said emulsion paint wouldn't stick to an oil based primer. It's a big room and I do not want to make more work for myself. Is there anyone out there to give me some advice please I am totally new to painting. Thank you

Hi, You have a choice of 2 ways. 1st you can buy some sugar soap and wash you walls down depending on how badly they are stained depends on how many times and how long it will take, then emulsion them. That is the cheapest way but it is hard graft. Or 2nd choice is to buy a tin of B-I-N its made buy Zinsser 1 coat is normally enough but then again all depends on how bad the stains are. it dries in around 20 minutes and you can paint over it in 45 mins. You are looking at around the £45 mark for litres expensive but well worth the buy save a lot of hard graft. It has never let me down. any paint decent paint shop will stock it or you can get it at B & Q. Hope this helps Tom

Hi We recently painted a nicotine ceilings with water based product and it did not help, so the only way is to paint with nicotine stain block which is OIL BASED that will stop everything. After, give light rub down with 180g paper and good quality paint like Dulux Trade, 2-3 coats

You can wash down with Sugar soap , or you can thin down some oil based primer with white spirits , then coat the affected areas , making sure all is covered , when dry give it a very light sanding , then paint with Emulsion , or you can paint straight over the nicotine stains , using oil based Eggshell paint which is available in any colour you like , it will give you a hard-wearing scrubable finish .
