Painting solid walls: what's the best type of paint to use and are there any that should be avoided?

For painting the inside face of solid walls in a Victorian house, does it matter what type of paints we use? I've heard that the walls need to be able to 'breath' so some paints for kitchens and bathrooms that are designed to resist moisture wouldn't be a good idea. Is this correct? Is this still the case if the internal faces have been plastered? What type of paint would you recommend? Are there any that we should avoid? Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Hi i would personally first abrade walls then put one coat of a very good product called Zinsser Guardz, give it an hour then i would double coat with Dulux diamond matt. i would not worry to much about breathable paint stuff, nothing beats daily fresh air in these victorian properties, and unless you have a issue or recurring issue then dont be worried. The Zinsser Guardz will do all the protecting your walls need anyway and the diamond matt will make the decoration solid giving the wall outer layer protection. Good luck Chris
