Our house was built in 1903 and hadn't been properly maintained over the years. Rick's quotation for the restoration and repointing wasn't the cheapest, but the attention to detail within it gave us great confidence in his knowledge - not only of the intricacies of lime mortar, tuck pointing etc, but also of period house construction and the types of bricks involved.
As per his quotation, Rick and his two assistants repointed our house in lime mortar. As part of that work they removed the original lime mortar, old cement-based repairs, conserved the existing brickwork and replaced some 180 failed or non-original bricks with reclaimed and new bricks, some of which were custom-made to match the shapes of the original decorative brickwork.
Rick and his team brought the project in one day under the original estimate, which Rick was completely upfront about. At my request, Rick used the "spare" day to tuck point the pillars on either side of the front door, reflecting our house's original appearance in 1903.
Rick and his team were 100% reliable, turned up when they said that they would, are all skilled craftsmen and are all really nice guys. The whole project was stress-free and our house now looks as it should - 115 years old and in splendid condition.
My wife and I can't recommend R. Hughes Building and Conservation Ltd highly enough. Rick Hughes is a craftsman who cares about the buildings that he works on and the end result has greatly exceeded our expectations.
