    Lime Render Repointing
Where do I start? Rick, Tom, and Jamie do not only do beautiful work and with great care, they are a pleasure to have around! My husband and I hired Rick after moving into a Grade II listed home last year. It had been seriously neglected on the outside which left us dealing with rainy weather entering our home. After initially touching base, Rick personally came out to the house and his extensive knowledge and appreciation for old buildings was so evident we didn’t even bother with quote comparisons. Covid pushed back our start dates and a neglectful window installer left us and Rick with further delays but he could not have been more accommodating, understanding, and helpful. There is more work to be done and we won’t be calling anyone else! If you want quality work, friendly folks and just an all around stress free experience, I could not recommend R.Hughes Building & Conservation enough!

Repoint/repair bricks of period house (one wall)
Great communication, especially as the Coronavirus Pandemic got in the way of this job. Rick kept me fully up to date and a suitable start date was agreed. He and his assistants turned up as arranged, were intelligent, pleasant and agreeable, worked hard and with commitment to making a good job of the pointing and brickwork repairs on our 200+ year old house. He charged a sensible price for the work which was done with care. I cannot recommend this business highly enough and would engage Rick again if I had more work to do.

New front garden wall in lime mortar
A very competent and experienced mason, who did a very good job of rebuilding our front wall in new handmade Cambridge gaults.

    Restoration/Repointing of a 6-bed Edwardian house.
Our house was built in 1903 and hadn't been properly maintained over the years. Rick's quotation for the restoration and repointing wasn't the cheapest, but the attention to detail within it gave us great confidence in his knowledge - not only of the intricacies of lime mortar, tuck pointing etc, but also of period house construction and the types of bricks involved. As per his quotation, Rick and his two assistants repointed our house in lime mortar. As part of that work they removed the original lime mortar, old cement-based repairs, conserved the existing brickwork and replaced some 180 failed or non-original bricks with reclaimed and new bricks, some of which were custom-made to match the shapes of the original decorative brickwork. Rick and his team brought the project in one day under the original estimate, which Rick was completely upfront about. At my request, Rick used the "spare" day to tuck point the pillars on either side of the front door, reflecting our house's original appearance in 1903. Rick and his team were 100% reliable, turned up when they said that they would, are all skilled craftsmen and are all really nice guys. The whole project was stress-free and our house now looks as it should - 115 years old and in splendid condition. My wife and I can't recommend R. Hughes Building and Conservation Ltd highly enough. Rick Hughes is a craftsman who cares about the buildings that he works on and the end result has greatly exceeded our expectations.

    Repointing 1900 end of terrace
We hired Rick to repoint the gable end of our 1900 cottage and rebuild the chimney. Rick and his team were very reliable and the work looks perfect, while still in keeping with the style of the property. Rick fully explained the work and they were finished within good time. Would definitely hire again. Thanks again guys

    Repointing of victorian house

We engaged Rick and his team to repair some crumbling lime mortar and flaked bricks on our Victorian house. They are indeed craftsmen and the finished result was superb. Their attention to detail, such as matching bricks, ensured that the walls looked as they had originally done a hundred or so years ago. Apart from their high level of skill, they were all courteous, hard working and turned up every day on time. We have received many positive comments from neighbours on the high standard of work. We can highly recommend Rick and his team.

    Extension - single storey - 6metres by 4 metres
Rick built my extension, a beautiful sun room. The room will make a huge difference to the feel of my house and will be much used and enjoyed. He made my design work. His work and that of Tom and the trades he employed on the job were all to a very high standard. I could not have asked for better. In addition to the extension, he has transformed my back garden, giving me a beautiful patio area. I would highly recommend him. Friendly, polite and the work was completed in good time despite the weather and at the agreed price.
