Plumbing Question

Water dripping sound from ceiling

A couple of weeks ago i noticed a weird sound, like dripping, on my flat ceiling where the kitchen area is (corner end of the flat). There is one apartment above my flat.

I know that it's likely that the reason is pipes that are expanding etc but is it normal for this sound to happen regardless if i have hot running water or not?

The dripping doesn't seem to the happen as specific times or if have the water running. Also sometimes have be very fast (3-4 "drops" per second), even sound like two drops almost at the same time, and sometimes very slow and scattered.

Is it possible there is indeed a leak? Is there a way to clarify this without having to break into the ceiling?

thanks!
Harry
