Plumbing Question

When water is turned off it makes a clunking noise

Hi I have recently had a bad leaking radiator and until we could get a plumber we turned off the boiler and the water (although we now realise that shutting off the mains wouldn't have made any difference!) Since the repair and turning the water back on, everytime the water is used it 'clunks' when turned off. Why is this and how do I cure this annoying noise? Any advice gratefully received.

Hi the noise is water hammer. Try turning the pressure down on the stop cock.
