Plastering Question

Lathe and plaster ceiling

We are preparing our 1937 bedroom ceiling ready for repainting. Can you tell me why we are finding loads of small protrouding blemishes that contain black stone like objects. The ceiling is full of them and also some on the walls. Any thoughts ?

That will be the coarse sand which is used in the lime mix, best thing to do is get the ceiling and wall skimmed over.

It is an old Lathe and plast ceiling, not good to skim over old lime it will eventually crack and come away. best to pull it down and plasterboard it then skim, unless you wish to re lathe and plaster with lime.
