I have met a tradesman who will be doing my building work. We have agreed the price and he wants a deposit to buy the materials. Is it safe to give him? since i do not know him although i met him through this website. Can i trust, i can get my money back just in case. Thank you. Anonymous.

It’s pretty common for a deposit to be taken for materials, do it via bank transfer so you have history of the transaction and ask for a receipt. Trust does need to work both ways between the tradesperson and customer 👍

At Kdf plumbing solutions , we usually take a deposit after the first day of work , just a deposit of the materials charge , and final payment on completion, we do this to build trust between the customer and tradesperson

you will have to decide if you trust him ,he could buy the materials and you may not pay him, he has to trust you, you have to trust each other, if you do not trust him find someone you do trust, the tv is always on about bad builders, but there just as many bad clients.

hi Ben, as a trades person myself i would ask for deposit as well in bigger jobs. you can never tell though who is trustworty or not. *there is a small claim court that you can apply for losses under 10k, if something goes wrong.

It is getting more common for trades to ask for a deposit.A small minority in our Society who don’t pay for completed work ruins it for everyone else.If you pay by bank transfer and get a receipt that would be acceptable. Before any work starts you can get a written agreement stating all work, pricing and payment intervals of the contractor.
