Modifying solar panel and battery system to in powercut

I'm due to get solar panels and a battery system fitted to my house. I'd like to know: is it possible to then set it up or convert it so that I can run my house mains off only the battery and solar panels, if there is a power cut?
I've been informed that normally, the system would switch off in a power cut. But that a certain type of switch can be installed? If anyone can tell me:
1) Is this possible?
2) Rough cost?
3) Can I hire an electrician to make the change after the solar panels and batteries have been installed?

Hi Alex.
My advice would be to go with hybrid grid-tie/off-grid inverter - so ask you installer for this function to be included in your system. This type of Inverter is the brain of the system and it can be configured in the following modes:
- 100% grid-tie. Energy generated by the solar panels is fed back to the grid.
- grid-tie + battery back-up. Generated solar power can be used to feed energy back to the grid, supply power to the load and charge the battery
- 100% off-grid. Energy generated by the solar panels can be used to power the load or charge the battery.
Depending on the size of your installation it can supply power to the whole property or a dedicated circuit.
To answer your three questions:
1. It is possible with the right inverter
2. This is like asking 'How much money do I need to buy a car' 😉
3. Again it's all down to the type and functionality of your inverter.

Hi you can retrofit a system but it would be very expensive. You would be better upgrading the system your installer is currently offering. The type of inverter would be around 20% more expensive ( just the inverter not the entire system). The problem with your current proposed system will be charging from the AC side of the inverter, if the AC signal is lost ( as in a power cut) the system can't charge, meaning once the batteries have discharged then you will have no power. With an inverter that charges from DC which comes from the panels then the power from the panels can run your premises & charge up batteries when you have excess. Try sunsynk inverter
