Builder hasn’t come in months.

Anonymous user 16 March 2024 - 3.31 PM

Hello, I’m making this post to seek for some advice. I have been constantly chasing up with my builder in order to ask for when he will continue our work, he took £4500 on the day to break the wall and claimed he’d come the next week. (June 2023) He did not show up. After multiple messages and 3 months later, he says he did not show up because we didn’t pay the full amount according to an agreement of £6000 each time he starts a new part of the project. He ASKED for £4500 on the day and we simply gave him the money he wanted. We said we understand and then sent him £1500 (September 2023) which he said doing so would make him come, the full £6000 now being paid. He did not show up. After texts back and forward, in which he tells us that his builder is off, personal issues and etc he continues to lead us on saying that he needs 2/3 weeks. We understand and wait, however every time the 3rd week is up and we decided to chase up to see if he’ll be coming, he requests for another 2/3 weeks again and again leading us all the way to February 2024. We have approached him on Instagram before when he doesn’t respond to our messages or calls but he blocks every account we make. We ask for dates in case he plans to come in the near future rather than bang on the next week and he still does not give a date but instead the same old request of 2/3 weeks showing that he isn’t possibly committed to our job. We’re getting tired of waiting and he claims he isn’t a runner and actually has taken all the money for work that has been done but the extension has not been finished at all. We have another builder on the side waiting for us to give him the job and we’re worried that our builder won’t come at all and we’ll lose the guy on the side too.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with this builder! It’s people like this that give us tradespeople a bad name. Trust me, we’re not all like this! Best bit of advice I could give is to drop this guy as quickly as possible and get your next contractor lined up ready to take it on. It doesn’t seem like he will be returning to your job anytime soon unfortunately. Get your new contractor to take on your job and try and redeem as much money as you can from this guy through small claims court. Best of luck!

Usually before you do a payment they have to provide you with an invoice or a quote all noted on word/pdf document with all the things they are about to do, and once the job is done you make the payment

Was your current builder invoicing you for each phase of works completed, if so, and you owed a balance that was not settled, this could have left him feeling like he is being messed around, thus, making him loose confidence in you as a customer. This could make him not want or be able to be fully committed to you project. If he was "NOT" invoicing your for works complete and payment made, exceeded the works complete, then it would suggest you are being messed about, if that is the case, I would suggest moving on to a builder you have confidence in. if you are owed work for funds paid, that would be something you could legally pursue. Trust and confidence in the working relationship between customer and builder goes both ways, if it is missing from either side, settle up and move on.
