Noises when Heating is switched on

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.47 PM

I am wondering if it is normal to hear creaking & dripping noises when the heating or hot water are turned on. The noise from the radiator in the bedroom wakes us up in the morning and there is noise from other radiators and hot tank pipes. The noise stops after a minute but starts every time the heating boosts again or hot water is used. Our pipes are plastic and it is a system boiler.

Hi there, Sorry to hear you are experiencing issues. A quick guess on what this could be is water hammer, air bubbles in your system could be causing loose pipes to vibrate and shake. You could try and bleed your radiators however if this doesn't help you may need to have a competent plumber/heating engineer out to investigate further. I Hope this helps.

Plastic pipe could be touching wood causing a tapping or creek when the pipes expand. This is very common in plastic installations as they have a tendency to expand and contract.
