Central Heating

Central heating header tank filling up from below

My overflow was leaking, so I investigated the problem.
After switching off heating, I propped up the ballvalve to stop mains water coming in, and bailed out the header tank.
The tank refilled itself, and the water seems to be coming up the down pipe from the tank, the opposite of what is supposed to happen.
Any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is hot water in the cylinder passing into the heating water coil which would mean your cylinder has failed turn off the water to the cold water storage tank and run off the water to below the water level in the header tank then retry your original test if it does not refill itself this time then you have found your problem.
