Driveways & Paving

What base layer is best for a brick driveway?

Anonymous user 1 March 2024 - 3.03 PM

I am choosing between two quotes for a brick driveways. One of them is using a concrete sub base and other crushed MOT type 1 stuff. Which is best? Price, reviews and final design are the same for both companies I will put a skip on the drive from time to time

A 150mm depth of type 1 compacted into place will give you a decent base for most driveway options.

By brick do you mean block paving? Most driveways you would put 150mm type 1 then your sand blinding to lay your pavers. This should be adequate to hold your skip, but please remember to lay some old 8x4 boards down to protect your driveway. If you wanted to be extra careful you could just lay a concrete slab under where you want to keep you skip. Hope this helps

I always lay reinforced concrete bases under my driveway when doing a slabbed driveways (Porcelain slabs) as you want zero movement under the slabs and concrete base is the only way to guarantee that. If you’re doing a brick paving driveway I would go with 150mm of MOT and 35 / 40mm of sharp sand before laying the brick pavers. The concrete slabbed option should be more expensive in my opinion so either they are very cheap or the MOT / sand quote is expensive. But it’s impossible without seeing the job with my own eyes.

A minimum of 150mm of type1 MOT stone compacted correctly on a ground membrane would be an adequate sub base for most domestic driveway installations

Minimum of 150mm - 200mm type mot but in some instances you may need an alternative such as concrete. If the area is generally flat then mot should be sufficient but if you parking heavy stuff more than 3.5tonnes then reinforced concrete may be required.
