Rsj sitting on cement

Anonymous user 3 March 2024 - 3.47 PM

Hi I have had an internal load bearing wall removed and an rsj fitted but it’s sitting on an inch of cement at each end, not the padstone directly. Is this a problem?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

This is not correct it should be on a small bed of cement to stop movement but not 1 inch. Hope this helps

Yes this is very bad the minimum difference that you RSJ should be sitting on is 150mm or six inches each side of wall . I would put some ackro back in to place to support the above and change the RSJ to the right size and also make sure the calculation for the size and thickness of the RSJ by a structural engineer who will give you the right calculation for your RSJ .hope this helps

Yes it is a problem it should have been packed up with steel plates not cement to withstand movement.

It should sit on the padstone directly. Dry packing with sharp sand cement can be used but soft sand and cement does not have the compressive strength. Minimum bearing of 150mm at either end is a must.
